Fixing the 404 Errors on Posts or Pages

404 errors on posts or pages

Note: The following solution will fix only 404 errors that appear sitewide. If you see the error only when visiting certain pages, it can be caused by a typo in the permalink, or if the page got deleted in the meantime.

If your site displays the home page correctly, but you see the 404 error when visiting all other posts and pages on your site, this usually means that the .htaccess file is missing. You should resave your permalinks to regenerate the .htaccess file.

Change WordPress permalinks

WordPress permalinks are the permanent web address URLs for your posts and pages. Using custom WordPress permalinks can improve the ranking of your site on search engines and help with search engine optimization (SEO). Also, custom permalinks are easier for your visitors to remember. You can activate and update permalinks through your WordPress dashboard in order to have SEO-friendly URLs.

Warning: You should always back up your site before making any changes.

  1. Sign in to WordPress
  2. In the left-side menu, select Settings and then select Permalinks.
  3. Select the permalink structure you prefer or select Custom Structure and create a custom one.

Note: OPTIONAL: You can also create a structure for your categories and tags

  1. Select Save Changes.
  2. The URL on your website's pages should display the permalink settings you selected.
