There are also rTLDs,or restricted top-level domains,like.aero,.edu,.mil,.museum,.name and.pro.These domains require the registrant to represent a certain type of entity,or to belong to a certain community. For example, the.name TLD is reserved for individuals,and.edu is reserved for educational entities.Take a look at the domain extensions currently available to register through Wurk and find the one that works best for your online venture.

Getting Started with Domains

Domain FAQ

What is a domain name and why do I need one?

A domain name is what people type into a browser to find a website - similar to how you use a street address to find a building. Every website, server, or digital device that is connected to the Internet has an assigned IP address that you can use to see or visit it. This IP address is a long string of numbers and letters that would be very difficult for people to memorize, so a domain name is simply a human-friendly version of that IP address.

When you type a domain name - like www.Wurk.com or www.google.com - into your browser, the domain name system, or DNS, takes this domain and translates it into its IP address, allowing the associated website to be found.

Having your own domain name can help you appear more legitimate to people who search for you or your business online. With a domain name, you can:

Bulid a website  for your storefront or ecommerce business

Create a professional email with your domain name

What is domain name registration?

Domain name registration is the process of finding a web address (like Wurk.com or LilysBikes.com), and then signing up to use it. You technically don't own the domain, but once you've registered it, it's yours to use for as long as you continue paying the annual registration fee. If you let your domain registration lapse, the domain will become available for someone else to register. To help prevent accidental expiration, Wurk offers an auto-renew option for all customers. For an extra layer of prevention, our Ultimate Domain Protection (an optional add-on) allows you to keep your domain for an additional 90 days after expiration.

How long does my domain name registration last? How do I renew my domain?

The duration of your domain registration can vary depending on the domain extension you purchase. With most extensions, domain name registrars allow customers to register domains for up to 10 years at a time. Typically, customers register domains for one to three years. Some premium domains and gTLDs (like .au and .nl) have shorter registration periods.

If you want to extend your registration, it's easy to renew your domain with Wurk. You can choose to manually renew  or set up auto-renewal, which helps ensure that your website name stays registered to you.

How do I get a free domain name?

Purchase an annual Web Hosting  plan or any annual  Managed WordPress  plan by Wurk and you'll automatically qualify for a free domain.

Once you click Add to Cart for a hosting or WordPress plan, you'll be given the option to select monthly or annual terms. Make sure to choose an annual term if you want to get the free domain.

Click Continue with These Options at the bottom of the page to move on to the next step. This is where you'll see a search bar to look for the domain name you want.

Once you've found the name you want, just add the domain to your cart and continue to checkout.

How to choose a domain registrar?

When deciding where to register a domain, you should consider the following:

Pricing: Pay attention to both initial and renewal pricing.

Privacy: Look for a registrar that includes privacy as part of domain registration and doesn't make it an additional upsell.

Customer support: Consider what communication channels are offered - phone, SMS, chat, email - and if they are available 24/7 or only during specific hours of the day.

Available domain extensions: If you want something more than a .com, .org, or .net, consider how many top-level domains the registrar offers.

Additional offerings: If you're looking to establish an online presence, check if the registrar offers other services, such as an online store or website builder, hosting, SSL certificates, etc.

Reputation: A company's track record speaks for itself. Check out customer reviews and Trustpilot ratings. Also, make sure that the company is ICANN-accredited.

What is a premium domain name?

Premium domain names are usually short and catchy domains that typically use the more popular extensions, like .com. In short, premium domains are extremely popular, which means they often cost significantly more than a traditional .com.

A great domain is crucial for a successful online presence. Your website is like your brick-and-mortar location, and your domain is like your piece of digital real estate. And if domains are like real estate, then premium domains are waterfront property. Here's a breakdown of the different ways you might see premium domains mentioned across Wurk.

  • Premium domains: At Wurk, premium domains are names that someone registered and then put up for sale in the aftermarket. Things like search engine optimization (SEO), ease of use and increasingly limited availability make premium domains cost quite a bit more than you might initially expect. A premium domain can add trust, credibility and better branding to your business’s online presence.
    • Premium domains have a high upfront cost but typically renew at standard renewal rates. Our Wurk Guides may be able to help you negotiate a lower price for a premium domain.
  • Registry premium domains: When a domain registry identifies a domain likely to attract many buyers, they label the domain as premium. And this designation leads to a higher price that reflects the higher demand. These domains might be especially short or include a hot keyword, and people are lining up to get their hands on it.
    • Domains designated by the registry as premium often have a high upfront cost and renew at a higher rate. These prices are non-negotiable.
  • Premium listings: Imagine you got lucky and registered a domain that you know has premium appeal. What should you charge? How do you sell it? Wurk’s Premium Listings is a white-glove service that helps you price and sell your domain on the aftermarket.

To purchase a premium domain, add it to your shopping cart and complete checkout. You'll have to pay a transfer fee and a registration fee. You can access the domain name in your account after we complete the transfer process.

What's the difference between a domain, website, and email hosting?

Your online presence may be comprised of different elements, including your domain name, website or hosted content, and email address. But what is the difference between these elements and how does that impact your online presence?

Select a question to see its answer:

  • What is a domain name?
  • What is web hosting?
  • What is email hosting?
  • Why is the difference important?

What is a domain name?

A domain, such as coolexample.com, is a human-readable series of letters and numbers that translate into an Internet Protocol, or IP, address. When entered into a browser's address bar, a domain can direct the Internet user to your website. You can think of a domain like the street address of your house—it's the specific location, or piece of land, that you'll use to build your house.

To get to this location, you must register a domain through a domain registrar. A domain registrar is an accredited organization, like Wurk, that facilitates the registration of domains to the public. The person who registers a domain is called the registrant. A registrant keeps a domain registered in exchange for a registration fee and risks losing the domain if the fee is unpaid. Get your very own domain name from Wurk.

What is web hosting?

A common way to use a domain is to connect it to a website for users to visit. To operate a website, you must make its files and content accessible by having web hosting through a web hosting company. A web hosting company houses and serves your website's files and content, and enables you to make your website's content accessible to the world.

You might have your domain registered with a different company than your web hosting company, so it's important to know where to manage each element. For example, if you need to change the contact information on your domain, you go to your domain name registrar, but if you have an issue with an image on your website, you go to your web host. Many people prefer to have all aspects of their online presence with one company for easier management, but others prefer the separation for a variety of reasons. Choose a web hosting plan from Wurk  and see how you can also get a free domain name.

What is email hosting?

Email hosting is a service that stores your email messages and files on a server. Those servers manage the sending and receipt of emails. You can use free email hosting providers, like Gmail and Yahoo, or you can set up a custom email address with your domain.

Your registered domain, web hosting, and email hosting can all be with different companies. You can also keep everything with the same company, often in a bundled option when registering a domain or setting up web hosting. Check out our email hosting plans

Why is the difference important?

Domains, websites and email addresses are all pieces of the greater online presence. Having a custom email address and website depend on having a domain. Visitors get to your website by entering your domain in their browser's address bar, and they send emails to your custom address. You can have a domain without an email address or website, but you can't have an email address or website without a domain.

Knowing the difference between your domain, web hosting and email is important for keeping track of your online presence. You need to be able to determine where an issue might be coming from, such as whether it's your email or your domain having problems. If you have your domain, web hosting and email through different companies, you'll also need to know which company to go to for fixing issues or managing your services.
