Extended support for PHP version 7.4 and 8.0 with ZendPHP

WordPress has a thriving community of plugin and theme developers who have been contributing to the WordPress ecosystem for a long time. Throughout this, PHP has gone through its own development cycle to overcome threats and improve the quality of its functionality. Currently, WordPress requirements support PHP version 7.4 or greater.

PHP 7.4 was put into end-of-life (EOL) status at the end of 2022 by PHP.net. This EOL change put a lot of strain on WordPress developers to update their code to support the newest versions of PHP.

We understand that staying current with PHP standards can be a challenging situation. With that in mind, we have partnered with Zend to provide extended long-term support (LTS) for PHP versions 7.4 and 8.0! PHP 7.4 is already available and 8.0 will be available by the time PHP.net moves it into end-of-life (EOL) status in November 2023.

This LTS from Zend will provide our customers who use PHP 7.4 and 8.0 with a secure experience on our WordPress hosting platforms until November 2026 for PHP 7.4 and December 2025 for PHP 8.0.

How can I find out which PHP version my site is using?

You can find your PHP version in several locations:

  • Managed WordPress hosting dashboard: Under Settings, select Production Site and PHP Version. You can update your PHP version here as well.
  • WordPress Dashboard: On the Home page, an admin message will display PHP Update Required. Follow the link to update your PHP version.
  • PHP info script: You can create a PHP info file and place it in the root directory of your WordPress site with an FTP app or a File Manager.
  • Loading this file in your browser will display your PHP version info.

Supported Versions

Each release branch of PHP is fully supported for two years from its initial stable release. During this period, bugs and security issues that have been reported are fixed and are released in regular point releases.

After this two year period of active support, each branch is then supported for two additional years for critical security issues only. Releases during this period are made on an as-needed basis: there may be multiple point releases, or none, depending on the number of reports.

Once the four years of support are completed, the branch reaches its end of life and is no longer supported.
